San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico is the largest city on this gorgeous Caribbean island which is an unincorporated US Territory. Waterfalls, mountains, and a rainforest. Plentiful beaches, bars, and restaurants with colorful buildings and huge fortresses. San Juan is a great change of pace if you frequent Florida or another southern beach destination.

Beaches, Plantains, & Slot machines

Puerto Rico has it all. You can see why people who are looking to live in a modern beach resort community choose this stunning country. Here you’ll find sandy white beaches, crystal clear water, cuisine inspired by cooking traditions from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, a colorful downtown area full of history and rich in culture, and a plethora of local hotel casinos.  Puerto Rico was peaceful and beautiful.

We stayed in an area called Carolina, located in eastern Puerto Rico.  Carolina was intermixed with white sandy beaches, restaurants, and hotels, all within walking distance from each other.  Carolina was not a far taxi ride from Old San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico.  In Old San Juan, one can take a stroll amongst the crowded, music-filled, cobblestone, narrow streets lined with historic museums and colonial buildings, restaurants, and galleries, and local vendors selling handmade crafts, local food, and hand-rolled cigars.

Travel Tip: If you travel more than 2-3 times a year, making use of the Airport Lounges is a must! You will save your costs back quickly if you tend to use wifi, buy coffee, and alcohol, or eat meals. We use the Priority Pass that came with our credit card membership, and we love it! Find this and other tips on our Travel Tools Page.

We were feeling lucky one night, so we headed over to San Juan to check out the casinos.  We were pleasantly surprised by the casino scene in Puerto Rico.  Although the casinos were much smaller in comparison to a Las Vegas or Atlantic City casino, the casino setup and the vibe was exactly the same (just on a smaller scale).  There were table games, roulette, craps, blackjack, and of course, slots.  Like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, you are served free drinks if you are playing, however, in Puerto Rico, you only have to be 18 to play.
